Artist Statement

Who am I?

I am a BA Hons Fine Art Graduate, looking to work in the graphic or illustrative Design or in any art industry through minor jobs in Painting/ Decorating and commission work in graphic and illustrative design. The plan for this career path is to create a portfolio based on various designs, colour schemes and client requirements for a specific brief or idea along social media platforms. The tasks within a designer/illustrator resume are speaking with clients and figuring out what is the best design and concept to use when creating a variety of aspects within a social and entertainment platform. these aspects can range from emotes, to profile pictures, to banners and title screens for stream settings.

In terms of my painting, it focuses on movement, light and psychogeography in the style of impressionism. I intend to convey the kinetic energy of the subjects in my static paintings using varied watercolour techniques that differ from the techniques I used when creating oil paintings. These mediums are quite different in terms of application and outcome. With these new techniques, the process is still the same where I draw, block in, model and detail my paintings. The only change applied is my style. It has evolved in creating a mood more closely resembling a painting rather than photo-realism. My compositions are amplified by new forms and colours provided by the selective range of watercolour paints available. These compositions and selective colours create the illusionistic blurred effects of passing cars and bright lights in the dark of night.

Compared to my oil paintings that ranged from postcard size to A1, the size of the watercolour paintings is standard A4 paper size to A1. That is where my capabilities allowed me to go. However, dealing with health issues has encouraged my practice to take a different path from large-scale obscure oil paintings depicting similar and repetitive busy roads. My art now displays many more perspectives and includes the people and narrative it was so desperately needing. It was essential to continue to depict these urban landscapes, give it a story/purpose to make the painting more exciting and allow a more precise understanding of a concept.  The reason for continuing these concepts is because they excite me to work on them. I also feel that they offer a new style for audiences and other artists to look at and get inspired to try and depict something that is well known but in their way. In addition, the University had stated that they had an empty wall space that is needed to be filled with some art. Therefore, I decided to propose my work concepts to them as it is a complete painting.

Additionally, it is based on a Northern School of Art student. These new works are based on the idea of a linear journey—specifically, the student's journey to and from University along Church Street. Therefore, when displaying these works, I needed to consider the space available to me and the colour scheme of the office to incorporate these aspects into my paintings where necessary so that I met the outcomes given by the client. Which I feel I have done successfully and to the client's standards who were also satisfied.
